Bullet Point Updates

Oct 13, 2016

  • New capture total: On October 7th, I finally got back out on the road & put the drone up in the air. The newest beacon captured for the project - Moshers Island Lighthouse, amongst the LaHave Islands in Lunenburg County - brings our total now to 107 lighthouses filmed.

Sincerest mahalo to Tony Smith for spending the day sailing Larry around islands in the area. (A visit to West Ironbound Island resulted in seeing the lighthouse has been replaced by a skeletal beacon, and hence it is removed from our list of those to be captured for the project. We also visited Cross Island, however were not able to safely land on the beach via the small plastic punt; as such, a return trip to Cross Island will be in the works).

With 107 beacons captured, and 18 removed from the list (skeletal, destroyed, etc), we have 55 remaining to film for the project.

  • 2016 Parrsboro Film Festival: We have been invited to attend and participate in all three days of the 6th annual Parrsboro Film Festival, which is October 21st - 23rd.  On Saturday, 2016-Oct-22, beginning at 3:45pm (1545hrs), we will be giving a presentation about our #NSLighthouseProject, as well as showing a short film of several lighthouses we're captured via drone to date. On Sunday, 2016-Oct-23, a 20-minute compilation video of some of our favourite footage - which will include works from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Alberta, Florida, Maui & The Big Island of Hawaii - will be aired as the last piece of film to close the festival. Further, throughout the weekend, we will be sitting at a table in the greeting area where we will run video loops, have some of our #NSLighthouseProject decals for sale, provide info about the project, have business cards available, etc.

It would be FANTASTIC if some of you dropped by to meet in person, attend the presentation and/or see the final film of the festival.

    Mahalo!

  • New photos added: We've updated the site with some new photos. Please take a look at a few of our new lighthouse captures.

  • HELP STILL NEEDED: We are in need of assistance to capture MANY off-shore lights, which require transportation via boat. We are hoping some visitors to this page can either offer direct assistance, or perhaps share our contact information with those who may be able to help. Here are the islands for which we have yet to confirm and/or acquire transport:

Well I have managed to survive the open heart surgery, though I am still required to stay fairly low key while I continue through the recovery stage. As such, this provides me with time to compete post-production work on a significant amount of footage I have recorded for the #NSLighthouseProject.

Just last week, I released a video on Point Prim Lighthouse, which is near Digby.

And today, I released a video on Horton Bluff Range FetonThere will be a temporary suspension of our #NSLighthouseProject, as I am having open heart surgery on Wednesday (Aug 31st).

I’m very sorry to share this news… and trust me, no one is more devastated about it than I. But please rest in the fact that, should everything go well for me (and it bloody well better!), this suspension will be of short duration. I’ll be able to use much of my recovery time doing post-production work on the vast amount of footage I have already accumulated, so make sure you keep an eye out for a bunch of new videos! Further, once I am mobile again, I will be back out on the road to collect the remaining 57 lighthouses in this beautiful province.

I’m looking forward to jumping another of life’s hurdle and getting back to one of my true passions and loves: this Nova Scotia Lighthouse Project.

Mahalo!

  • New capture total: The capture of Battery Point Breakwater, located near Lunenburg, and Gunning Point Island, located near Blue Rocks, brings our grand total to 97 lighthouses.  Gunning Point was one that we had not previously included in our list as some websites failed to mention it at all amongst their cache of NS lighthouses. (Of note, it was listed on the NSLPS website, which is the reason we ever even sought it out. Otherwise we too may have failed to recognize it. Though in fairness, while speaking with an elderly local about the location of the light, she thought it was no longer there.) Take a look at the "By the Numbers" page on this website to see which lighthouses we've captured, and which we've yet to visit.

  • Upcoming presentations / appearances: THIS SATURDAY, Larry will be attending the "World Oceans Week" events at White Point Lodge & Beach Resort. Further, he will be offering a 60 minute presentation on our #NSLighthouseProject, the drone, and more. Please come out to see Larry at 7:30pm, June 4. All the details can be found by clicking here.

  • New photos added: We've updated this website with some new photos. Please take a look at some of the new lighthouse and landscape captures.

  • New capture total: In case you hadn't noticed, we have now captured a total of 95 lighthouses, and have removed 17 from the list (as they are now destroyed, skeletal towers, etc).  Take a look at the "By the Numbers" page on this website to see which lighthouses we've captured, and which we've yet to visit.

  • Upcoming presentations / appearances: Larry is thrilled to be attending the "World Oceans Week" events at White Point Lodge & Beach Resort. Further, he will be offering a 60 minute presentation on our #NSLighthouseProject, the drone, and more. Please come out to see Larry at 7:30pm, June 4. All the details can be found by clicking here.

  • Nova Scotia Legislature: On 2016-May-17, The Honourable Bill Horne, elected representative of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, delievered a brief speech to The Speaker and other members about the #NSLighthouseProject! Click here to see a video of his mention.

  • New photos and video added: We've updated this website with some new photos and videos. Please take a look through the pages to see some of our new material!

Apr 17, 2016

  • New lighthouses captured: We hit the road bright and early today to make sure we took advantage of some (finally!!) advantageous weather.  With the additions of Balache Point Range Rear, Canso North, Havre Boucher Range Rear, and Pomquet Island, we have now captured a total of 72 lighthouses. Further, as we also confirmed Havre Boucher Range Front to be a skeletal tower, we removed that from the list, bringing the total of skeletal / destroyed beacons to 15.  As such, we now have a total of 92 lighthouses left to capture / visit.  Almost at the half-way point!

  • Upcoming presentations / appearances: We will be in Clark's Harbour on April 23 to present at a fundraiser for the Friends of the Cape Sable Light. On April 27, we are scheduled for a 45-60 minute presentation at the Annual General Meeting for the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society. And on June 4, we will be offering a 45-60 minute presentation on our #NSLighthouseProject to guests at the White Point Lodge & Resort.

Our NEWEST #NSLighthouseProject video has been released: Cape d'Or Lighthouse, on the Bay of Fundy, Cumberland County.  Click here to watch!

Mar 25, 2016

  • Canada AM: We were thrilled to learn that Jeff Hutcheson's interview with us about the #NSLighthouseProject was re-broadcased today. Very proud they re-aired it, and excited it introduced our project to several new people. Thank you very much, CTV & Canada AM!

  • Amherst News: After capturing the last two lighthouses from our list in Cumberland County - at Cape d'Or and Apple River - Larry was interviewed by Andrew Wagstaff of Amherst News / The Citizen-Record newspaper. His article viewed by clicking here.

  • New videos: Since our last update, we have released two new videos: Walton Harbour (winter shoot) and Medway Head. We will also be releasing new videos within the coming weeks; the videos will include lighthouses at Apple River, Port Greville, Spencer's Island, Cape d'Or, Western Head and Sandy Point, amongst others.

  • New totals: As of today, we have captured a total of 65 lighthouses for the project, as well as eliminated 14 (as they are skeletal towers or destroyed, etc). We have a total of 101 remaining to capture for the project. That puts the grand total at 179 after learning about some other lighthouses via additional research (we don't know whether or not these additional lights are still in existence, but we'll make every effort to determine same).

  • New site page: We have added a new page called "By the Numbers". This page will provide updates on the numbers of lights captured, removed from our list and the total outstanding. Further, the page features a list of every lighthouse in the province, and shows which have been captured, which have been removed and which we still have yet to do... this way, you can follow us and the project along in more detail, as you'll know each light as we capture it.

  • Some site changes: If you've dug around this website a little bit over the past couple of days, you may have noticed that we have changed some things. The "Showreels" page for the "Nova Scotia Lighthouse Project" has had all the videos removed. We found it was getting cluttered and wasn't very user friendly. As such, we have now just included a list of available lighthouse videos; a click on a particular title will bring you directly to a page for that video. It looks much tidier and should be easier to navigate. We are also now including a date to show the last time the website was updated; this can be found on the homepage.

  • Age of Sail AGM: We were invited to speak at the April 10th annual general meeting of the Age of Sail Heritage Centre & Museum, located in Port Greville, Cumberland County. Due to a scheduling conflict, we are not able to attend. However, we have filmed a 22 minute presentation - with drone video and photos, information about the project, the "inside scoop" about our work, and more - exclusively for the Age of Sail's AGM; the presentation also includes a Q&A session, as the group's members sent in questions to us via email. The presentation should be fun to watch; further, all are welcome to attend the Age of Sail's AGM. Please send us an email for more details, or contact the Age of Sail Heritage Centre & Museum directly.

  • #LighthouseProject story on "The Signal".  Produced by Rebecca Brown, Kings College journalism student, during our visit to Spry Bay & Musquodoboit Harbour Range Rear Light on 23-January-2016, this story is about our project and some of the challenges we face.  It was aired on the local EastLink cable channel.  Click here to watch the video.

  • New photos.  We are uploading new photos to our Nova Scotia Lighthouse Project and Landscapes & More stills sections.  So check back more often to see our newest photographs!

  • Exciting news!  But you'll have to wait, because we'll not releasing it until February 6th.  So check back!

  • East Hants Journal:  Larry was interviewed yesterday by Colin Chisholm of the East Hants Journal.  The interview was conducted at the grounds of the Walton Harbour Lighthouse, while Larry sent the drone up and recaptured the lighthouse during a high-tide, winter shoot.  A small print version of the interview will appear in the newspaper, while a significantly more indepth version, featuring video of the interview, will be available on their website.  Once it is posted, we will add a link to the "In The News" page.

Jan 25, 2016

  • Our website has finally launched!  We're very excited and proud of the work that has gone in to completing it.  There will be further additions to come, including an "About" page.  Hopefully that will be up within the next day or two.

  • Our latest video blog has been released.  Titled "Spry Bay, Cold Drone, Great People...", you can see the vlog on Facebook, YouTube or even better, just by checking out the "Blog" section of this website!

  • Guest speakers.  We are very proud to have been asked as special guest speakers at the AGM for the Age of Sail Heritage Centre, as well as the AGM for the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society (NSLPS).

  • Business cards.  We have just received our first print shipment of "Nō Ka 'Oi Drone Guys" business cards.  The cards were ordered in hope of making it easier for people to find us and follow the project.  We meet a lot of people while attending the lighthouses, as well as through other means; those interested in what we're doing were having a difficult time tracking us down, especially because of our name. Hopefully the new business cards will help.  Make sure to hit us up for one if you see us out around!  They look quite sharp.  :)

  • New videos.  We will be releasing some new #NovaScotia #LighthouseProject videos within the next several days.  The first will be a winter shoot at the Musquodoboit Harbour Range Rear Light. We'd already attended this one, but returned again with some King's College journalism students, who wanted to do a story on the project.  As conditions weren't great, the flight was quite limited, and hence the video is short. But we are posting it nonetheless as there are some solid shots in it. We are also currently working on a video for Coldspring Head, Pugwash (old) and Pugwash (new).  Further, our Hants County Lighthouses video - featuring Burntcoat Head, Walton Harbour & Mitchener Point - is awaiting release, once our interview with the local paper is completed.

  • Still at #48... but for how long?  Though still at a total of forty-eight captured lighthouses, we're hoping the weather this week allows us to surpass the fifty mark. Fingers crossed!

  • Upcoming interviews.  As mentioned above, we just completed an interview with Rebecca Brown, a Kings College journalism student.  The story will be aired on EastLink; a copy will be provided to us so we can share it with you on this site via the "In The News" section.  We are also scheduled to meet with journalists from the East Hants newspaper and the Amherst/Cumberland County newspaper, as well as an on-camera interview with The Weather Network.

  • Suggestions.  If you have a suggestion for something you'd like to see on this page, then fire us off an email.  Just go to the "Contact" page.
